Sangeet Ashram recently organized a programme at G.D. Birla Sabhaghar, featuring the vocalist, Piu Mukherjee (picture), and the sitar player, Gaurav Mazumdar. Mukherjee focused on thumri and tappa, genres best suited to her voice. She sang a thumri set to ardha taal as well as one in Raga Behaag, which is rarely heard with thumri and dadra. Mukherjee's presentation of the attributes of the Purab-Ang style of thumri was distinct and she reached out to the listeners with her originality. The depth of her voice was revealed when she sang a tappa in Mishra Kafi. The presentation was made more interesting by her through the insertion of clever and small taans, keeping the flavour of tappa alive. She concluded her performance with a melodious dadra in Mishra Gara. Imon Sarkar on the tabla and Debashish Adhikary on the harmonium provided able accompaniment.

Delhi based sitarist, Gaurav Mazumdar, commenced his performance with Raga Yaman and took time to bring out the charm of the raga through his long alaap, followed by a gat in Rupak. His performance was pleasant and smooth but it was lacking the extra sparks needed to enhance the ambience. Mazumdar's rendition of Raga Tilak Shyam was compact and enjoyable, but the performance on the whole lacked uniqueness and improvization. He was accompanied by Soumen Nandy on tabla.

Another event celebrating Indian classical music was organized by Classic at the Ashutosh Memorial auditorium. The programme began with the rendition of ragpradhan songs and bhajans by Rajiv Kar Chowdhury, who was accompanied by Gopal Banerjee on the tabla. Then, the generous voice of Saswati Bagchi enchanted the listeners with kheyals in jhamptaal and teentaal in Raga Durga, followed by a thumri. She was ably assisted by Ujjwal Bharati on the tabla and Pradip Palit on the harmonium. Tirthankar Banerjee began his sitar recital with Raga Purvi Kalyan and went on to a gat in Raga Shyam Kalyan. His performance was sweet to the ears with the accompaniment of Sandip Banerjee on the tabla. The programme ended with a vocal recital by Aniruddha Bhattacharya who presented both vilambit and drut kheyals in Raga Shree.

The evening was made more enjoyable with the performance of the troupe, Tarang. Its ensemble performance included artists like Niladri Sen and Ajanta Silpi on the sitar, Saktipada Nag on the flute, Pradip Nag on the mohan veena, Sutapa Duttagupta and Jayanto Pandey in vocal recital, Debasis Sarkar and Tarun Roy on the tabla as well as Subhobroto Ghatak on the organ.
