Let the music flow

The Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Calcutta, organized a masterly violin recital by Deb Sankar Roy and Jyoti Sankar Roy - popularly known as the violin brothers. The artists demonstrated their command over the instrument and the repertoire of classical music through an interesting and rhythmic structure along with Shankar Narayanswamy on the Carnatic mridangam and Arindam Chakravarty on the tabla. The concert began with Raga Kirwani set to rupak taal in madhyalaya and teen taal in drut gats. The brothers took turns in playing the raga and highlighted its beauty with some charming passages.

Then came Raga Megh set to 12 beats; the crisp presentation brought out the magic of the monsoon raga. Bhupali in teen taal was the next composition; it was brisk and had an engaging groove with the flavour of lasting till the enjoyable sawal jawab between the violinists and the percussionists on the mridangam and tabla. The percussionists ended with a short and resonant composition. The violin brothers concluded with a dhun in Raga Bhairav and a popular Rabindrasangeet, " Bhenge mor gharer chabi", with subtle improvisations.

Taalsen Academy of tabla and vocal music put together a tuneful and rhythmic soiree of innovative compositions at Gandhi Bhawan in Jadavpur University. The event started with with Saraswati vandana, followed by a Raga Malika composition by Sanjukta Ghosh and Swapan Shiv. The hard work of the young talents at the academy made the performance enjoyable. The presentation of Raga Anuraag took the programme to another level. The vocal rendition by Mousumi Singha Roy, Sreeradha Chanda, Jishnudeep Chowdhury, Aporupa Sengupta, Pratima Dey, Nabomita Chatterjee, Aahiree Banerjee and the accompaniment by Kuntal Das, Sourav Dutta, Debashish Karmakar and Deborshee Mukherjee made this part enchanting.

The vocal recital by Nibedita Banerjee in Raga Jayjayanti enhanced the charm of the musical evening. The programme ended with a composition by Subhankar Banerjee which encapsulated the eternal journey of music, capturing flavours of global music compositions. It featured Debjit Patitundi and Pritam Chakraborty on tabla, Pratik Shrivastava on sarod, Ayan Sengupta on sitar, and Deborshee Mukherjee on keyboard.

Devi Pratidhwani and the family of the late Girija Devi celebrated her 89th birth anniversary with a programme, Yaadein, in ICCR. Abhigyan Dutta set the tone of the evening with his santoor. A short alaap was followed by an interesting gat presentation in Raga Kirwani. An Odissi performance by children to Ganga Stotram by Shankaracharya was fascinating. Then, Suha Khan gave a glimpse of her versatility in a short span with Raga Shankaram followed by a ghazal and qawali. She was accompanied by Rohan Bose on the tabla, Sarwar Hussain on the sarengi and Bihu Mukherjee on percussion.

Rashid Khan (picture) enchanted listeners with his skilled style. Raga Gorakh Kalyan was embellished with his sparkling vistaars and taans followed by a melodious thumri in Pahari. His son, Arman Khan, provided vocal support to his teacher. The vibrant accompaniment by Shubhankar Banerjee on the tabla, Jyoti Goho on the harmonium and Sarwar Hussain on the sarengi boosted the performance.
