Jajpur, May 4: A youth was arrested today on charges of possessing large quantity of explosives in Jajpur.

The arrested has been identified as one Ranjan Kumar Parida (30) alias Kalia, a resident of Rampei village under the Jenapur police station limits in the district.

Parida was produced in the court of judicial magistrate first class at Jajpur Road and remanded to judicial custody after his bail application had been rejected.

The Panikoili police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted the motorcycle on which Kalia was travelling near the overbridge at Panikoili bazar yesterday.

Police recovered 395 power gelatins, 1,450 detonators, 350 mechanical detonators and 18 coils of safety wire from his possession. Kalia was travelling to Bhadrak from his native at Rampei when he was caught along with the explosives.

The accused told the police that he used to sell explosives used in blasting of mines and quarries. Police also seized the motorcycle used in the crime from Kalia’s possession.

Inspector in-charge of Panikoili police station Paresh Kumar Rout said the explosives were packed in bags. During interrogation it came to light that the explosives were procured from outside to smuggle it in Jajpur and other neighbouring districts.

Superintendent of police (SP), Jajpur, D.S. Kuttey said preliminary investigations had revealed that the seized explosives were normally used in blasting mines, quarries or other works.

“The seized explosives are normally used for purposes other than extremist activities. Hence we are investigating into all angles,” the SP said.

“We are still ascertaining as to from where the explosives have been supplied to the quarry and for what purpose. We can’t rule out anything right now as the investigation is on,” said Kuttey.

The SP said police of Bhadrak and Keonjhar districts had also been alerted in this connection.

Police is conducting raids at different places to arrest the other two involved in it.
