Koraput: Classes resumed at Central University of Orissa (CUO) here on Friday after students called off their three-day agitation following authorities' assurance of fulfilling their demands within a stipulated time frame.
"We had discussion for over three hours with the students regarding their 60 demands, which they had put forth before the varsity. While many of the demands had been fulfilled, the students were assured that the remaining ones would also be fulfilled shortly," said vice-chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty. "The students were urged to attend classes, and they agreed to it."
Ever since the varsity was opened on Tuesday after remaining closed sine die since March 15, the students had been demanding the fulfilment of their 60 demands. While the students locked the varsity's administrative building on its permanent campus at Sunabeda on Wednesday, they resorted to dharna on its Landiguda campus on Thursday. Fearing any untoward incident, the authorities deployed police on the Landiguda campus on Thursday as the students were aggressively sloganeering against the vice-chancellor.
"As the authorities have promised to meet our demands within a time frame, we have temporarily halted our agitation," said a student.
Tension had gripped the varsity's main campus on the night of March 14 when the students sat on dharna, demanding fulfilment of their demands, including appointment of permanent professors, round-the-clock health care facilities on the campus, Wi-Fi facilities, hostel facilities for the research scholars, shifting of the main administrative office from Landiguda to its main campus, 24-hour water supply in the hostels, installation of ATM counter on the campus and photocopy facilities in the hostels among others.
The students had also condemned the authorities' decision of declaring sine die. Established in 2009, the varsity imparts education in 14 subjects with a student strength of around 850.
