Bhubaneswar: Students of Rama Devi Women's University on Saturday blocked Janpath to demand additional land for its second campus and retention of the autonomous status for affiliated Plus Two and Plus Three colleges.

The students alleged that the government decided to separate Plus Two and Plus Three colleges from the institute after it had got the university tag in 2015. They blamed the government for delays in identifying land for its second campus that hampered their careers.

"We are not going to stop our agitation until the government takes steps to resolve our problems. We will boycott classes and examinations till we get a satisfactory answer from the authorities," said an agitating student.

Rama Devi Women's Autonomous College was upgraded to Rama Devi Women's University on May 30, 2015. However, problems continued to persist as the varsity's present campus is too constricted for development. Authorities had tried to get land from Utkal University, but students of that varsity opposed it.

The government had identified a patch at Daspur on the city outskirts, but that plan was also dropped on account of its distance. The varsity needs an additional 30 acres for its second campus.

A varsity administrator said they had identified two patches for the second campus. This will be finalised in month or two while the demand to retain autonomous status for the colleges needed to be discussed at a higher level, he said.

"We are taking steps for their benefit. The second campus will be set up where we plan to shift some important departments and equip those with quality infrastructure."
