Grand day
Schools in the state capital celebrated Grandparents’ Day by organising an array of interesting activities for the elderly.
At Mother’s Public School, students sang, danced, recited poems and presented skits centred on the pivotal role of grandparents in every child’s life. DAV Public School, Unit VIII, organised a competition in which grandparents had to whip up a variety of pithas (country cakes).

They also took part in a balance race. At the end of the celebrations, the students gave their grandparents handmade crowns and gifts.
Scholastic talent
Five students of DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur), Bhubaneswar, have been selected for the prestigious National Talent Search Examination Scholarship. Abhishek Panda, Debjeet Tripathy, Gourav Jena, Nikhil Mishra and Sourav Rath will receive an annual grant of Rs 25,000 till completion of their higher studies. The five Class X students, along with seven others, had been selected for the scholarship two years ago, when they were in Class VIII.
Apart from this, two other students of the school – Sourav Sahoo of Class IX and Nishit Pati of Class VII – were shortlisted for a trip to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, USA, for winning a RESO-STaRT scholarship.
Best principal
Science Olympiad Foundation, in collaboration with the British Council, conferred the best principal of the state award on S. Minaketan for the outstanding performance of ODM Public School, Bhubaneswar, in Olympiad exams conducted during 2012-13.
Students of the school Ritik Ranjan Rath, Soumya Ranjan Mohapatra and Atish Kumar Sahoo ranked among the top 25 at the national level. Overall, 41 students were presented with gold medals, 21 with silver and 36 with bronze medals in Olympiad.
Joy of giving
Young volunteers across the state reached out to 1,200 less-fortunate children and uncared-for elderly people on the occasion of Day of Service on October 2 and organised several fun activities for them. The events were held simultaneously in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Paradip and Dhenkanal.
In the state capital, many voluntary organisations such as Bakul Foundation, Young Indians, Humara Bachpan, Souls for Solace, Aasra along with the state women and child development department joined hands for the purpose.

Models on show
DeSouza’s English Medium School, Rourkela, organised a science and commerce exhibition on the campus on September 22.
Around 900 students from classes V to X displayed 320 models on themes borrowed from physics, chemistry, biology, commerce, economics and business studies. General manager of Rourkela UCO Bank, P.K. Dash inaugurated the event.

Students of Blossoms School, Bhubaneswar, observed International Peace Day on September 24 by organising a prayer meet and other activities.
The started with drawing and craft making on peace in the morning and titled them as “I am a Peace Maker”, “I love Peace”, “Give Peace a Chance” and so on. Later, senior students of primary and secondary classes came forward with placards demonstrating their inner feelings of peace.
Later, they assembled and sang songs of peace. They also took an oath to follow four basic principles of peace — prayer, reading holy writings, being decisive in constructive actions and being focused in their service to humanity. The International Peace Day celebrations are an annual feature of the school.
