Bhubaneswar: The state transport department has asked vehicle dealers not to deliver non-transport vehicles without permanent registration numbers from April 1.

A senior transport official said that the decision was taken to prevent vehicles plying across the state without registration numbers.

"The dealers deliver the vehicles after realisation of the vehicle cost, along with registration fees and tax revenue. But, the dealers used to send the papers to the transport office on their fancy. Sometimes, the dealers used to submit papers in bulk even after four months of the sale," said the official.

Rule 42 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, says a dealer can't deliver the vehicle to a buyer until its registration is complete. Transport officials said that the rule has been there, but it was not being followed for which the government was not getting tax revenue on time.

"No dealer of a non-transport vehicle shall deliver the vehicle to the purchaser without permanent registration, if the vehicle is intended to be registered with the registering authority from where the dealer has obtained trade certificate. If the non-transport vehicle is intended to be registered with other registering authority, the vehicle shall be delivered to the purchaser only after temporary registration," read the circular of the department. #The dealers would also deliver the vehicles with temporary registration numbers to buyers wishing to have fancy numbers.

The trade licence of the dealers will be cancelled if they do not stick to the rule from April 1.
