Bhubaneswar, Jan. 14: Police today arrested a 54-year-old Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher for allegedly molesting a 17-year-old student while giving her private tuitions.

The police said the daughter of the accused, identified as Binay Kumar Das, was the victim's classmate.

The police said the chemistry teacher, a native of Balasore, had been harassing the girl for the past three months on the pretext of guiding her in chemistry.

"The accused had been imparting tuition to the victim at her residence for the past three months. During this period, the teacher used to touch her inappropriately. This ultimately forced the girl to inform the matter to her parents, who asked the teacher not to come for tuition," said a police official.

Despite this, the victim alleged that the accused came to her home while her parents were at their neighbour's house.

"He told the girl that her progress in the subject was not satisfactory and asked her to revise the course. Later, Das started molesting her, and the girl shouted for help. On hearing the girl's screams, her parents rushed to the house and caught hold of Das," said a cop.

Later, her parents lodged a complaint with Kharavela Nagar police.

Deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi said the accused would be produced in court tomorrow.

"Das was arrested under sections 354 (outraging the modesty), 354-A (sexual harassment), 354-D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act," said Bhoi.

The police said that in the past three months the accused had been making sexual advances to her.

"The accused was also threatening the girl to mark her low in the practical examination," said a cop.
