Cuttack, Nov. 8: A newly wed couple today attempted suicide at Mahanadinagar under Jagatpur police limits over family feud. Though the wife survived, her husband died on way to hospital.
Police said Kalpatru Das, 25, of Mahanadinagar near Digi Sahi committed suicide over family feud. The incident occurred at 3am when Kalpatru allegedly consumed pesticide while wife Sushmita allegedly consumed sindur (vermilion).
Though the couple was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Das was declared received dead by the doctors.
“The man died because of poisoning and it is suspected that he had consumed pesticide. Though the lady had consumed sindur, her condition is stable and out of danger,” said SCB casualty medical officer A. Khan.
Both Das and Sushmita had married each other after divorcing their respective partners three months ago. However, the couple had a strained relationship and used to quarrel regularly.
Das’s family members were staying separately as Sushmita did not want to stay with them.
“My daughter-in-law (Sushmita) was reluctant to stay with us. Hence, we had asked the couple to stay separately,” said Kalpatru’s father Kamalakant Das.
Kamalakant said the couple used to quarrel regularly and for this reason, the house owner had asked them to vacate the house where they were staying on rent.
Sushmita, who had returned home after staying at her brother’s house yesterday, denied to stay with us. Though Kalpatru tried to convince her, she was not in a mood to listen. At 2am, both Kalpatru and Sushmita returned home and went to sleep.
“Suddenly we came to know that Kalpatru has consumed poison and immediately rushed him and his wife, who had also consumed sindur, to SCB,” Kamalakant said, adding that Sushmita was responsible for his son’s death.
On the other hand, Sushmita has denied the allegations levelled by her in-laws.
“There were no difference between me and my husband. However, yesterday he asked me for water and within few minutes his condition deteriorated. I do not know what he had consumed. Later, I consumed sindur,” said Sushmita.
