
The Intellects, a Delhi-based progressive forum of Odias, conferred the Prabasi Bhasha Samman for 2018 on Central University of Odisha, Koraput, vice-chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty along with 11 other eminent personalities of Odisha for their contribution to the cause of Odia language and culture. Mohanty is a former head of English department at the University of Hyderabad. He is the recipient of several national and international awards and the author of 29 books in English and Odia.
Hoops champs
KIIT University lifted the men’s and women’s titles in the SOA Inter-College Basketball championship, defeating BJB College and SOA (Deemed University), respectively, in the finals held recently. They defeated BJB College 38-14 in the men’s final and then pipped SOA by 28-21 in the women’s title round. SOA vice-chancellor Amit Banerjee distributed the prizes to the winners in the presence of SOA sports officer Sunita Burma.
Research summit
Xavier University Bhubaneswar recently hosted a two-day Annual Research on Cities Summit on the theme “Knowledge Systems for Livable Settlements” to share research and experience on planning and management of human settlements and urbanisation in India. There were discussions on topics such as Urban Governance and Development Trajectories, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Private Sector in Urban Development. Union ministry of housing and urban affairs additional secretary Sameer Sharma was present to interact with the students.
Convocation
The fifth convocation of the International Management Institute, Bhubaneswar, was held on its campus in which postgraduate diplomas were conferred to successful students of the PGDM 2015-17 and PGDM (part-time) 2013-16 batch. The gold medal was presented to Rameswar Behera and silver to Deepanjan Dutta for their outstanding performance in the PGDM batch 2015-17.
Annual event
Deputy chairman of the State Planning Board and former minister Bishnu Charan Das inaugurated the 43rd annual function of Paradip College recently. Das, in his speech, said the students were the wealth of a country and they should follow the legendary Biju Patnaik who built Paradip port without Central permission and funds. He assured that the demand of students’ union vice-president Sandip Kumar Palai for filling vacant posts of lecturers would be met. He also assured that boys’ and girls’ hostels of the college would be built. A rally from Biju Patnaik’s statue to the college premises was also held. The chief guest distributed prizes to the winners of different competitions organised by the students’ union.
Tech breakthrough
Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (Deemed University) celebrated its 15th foundation day on February 16. Bollywood actor, social activist and rugby player Rahul Bose delivered the foundation day lecture. Recounting his life experiences, he advised the students to “keep their heads cool even if their hearts were hot” and “under-promise and over-deliver” to succeed in life. A number of eminent personalities from diverse backgrounds attended the event to interact with the students.
