Cuttack, Jan. 28: Tension gripped Ravenshaw University campus after students of the sociology department staged a dharna against the authorities.
The students alleged that despite several notices, the varsity authorities were yet to take measures regarding revaluation of their answer sheets.
Protesting against the delay, the students boycotted their classes and threatened to launch an indefinite strike if their demands were not met at the earliest.
Earlier, around 20 students of the sociology department had moved the high court in 2012 seeking re-evaluation of their copies after they were awarded single digit marks in the first semester.
“It is now over a year that the Ravenshaw officials have not filed the counter petition required for initiating further course of action,” said Sefali Mohanty, a final-year student.
Mohanty said nearly 20 students were awarded single digit marks in the first semester examination in 2011. As there is no provision of re-evaluation, the students had moved the court demanding re-evaluation.
“I was awarded eight marks out of 40 in basic sociology in the first semester, while I scored 27 in the second semester. Due to such disparity, I could not apply for scholarship as my percentage of marks dropped,” said Laxmidhar Tripathy, another student.
Tripathy said that though around 10 students of their batch took re-examination, only four cleared the basic sociology papers.
“Most of the students are reluctant to appear in the back examination as they cannot get distinction in honours subject,” said Piyus Mohapatra, another final-year student.
However, the authorities said that as the matter is now sub-judice, appropriate action would be taken.
“We have already asked varsity advocates to take appropriate steps,” said registrar Padan Kumar Jena.
