Sambalpur/Berhampur: A student of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Science and Technology (VSSUT) committed suicide inside the hostel on Thursday evening.

Subhrajit Pal, 22, son of Samir Pal of Balimela in Malkangiri district and fourth-year student of civil engineering department, ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his room.

Although he was a fourth-year student, he had many back papers in his third-year examination and was preparing to appear for them in June.

The body was taken to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR) for post-mortem.

Last Sunday, K. Surya Gopal, 19, son of K. Mallikarjuna of Berhampur and a third-year student of architecture, had drowned in the Hirakud reservoir.

His body was fished out on Monday evening after a long search by the fire brigade personnel.

Another suspected suicide case by a student took place at Gayatri Nagar in Bada Bazar police limits in Berhampur on Friday evening. Rajesh Kumar Panda, 19, a student of Plus Two science, allegedly committed suicide by pouring kerosene on his body and set himself on fire.

"We have seized the body and sent it for post-mortem at MKCG Medical College and Hospital," said sub-inspector Koushik Majhi.

Ajit Kumar Panda, the father of the deceased, said Rajesh was studying in Arihant Junior Science College here and had appeared the Plus Two science examination by the Odisha Council of Higher Secondary Education.

"The result of the Plus Two science examination was scheduled to be declared on May 19. Apprehending failure in the examination, he might have taken the extreme step," Panda said. Rajesh had appeared for the Plus Two science examination twice, but failed in both the attempts.
