Tennis star
Tennis player Ansu Bhuyan emerged champion in the singles event in the six-day Ford Movilsa National Tennis Tournament by defeating Jorge Aguilar of Spain 3-0. The tournament was held at Alicante Valencia in Spain on July 29. Ansu received the trophy along with a cash award of 1,000 Euros. Earlier in the semi-finals, Ansu edged out
Jorje Tagliaferro of Spain 2-0 (6-2,6-3) and Ignacio Sandubla 2-0 (6-0,6-0).
Rugby women
The team of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, Bhubaneswar, emerged champion in the girls' category of the All-India Rugby 7's Under-17 Club National Championship defeating Saraswatipur of Siliguri 12-7 at Hi-tech Medical College Ground in Bhubaneswar on July 30. Jungle Crow of Calcutta grabbed the boys' title by eliminating Future Hope (also from Calcutta) 17-7. The teams of Jharkhand girls and Saraswatipur boys finished third in their respective categories. Altogether 30 boys' and 21 girls' teams from 15 states took part in the three-day tournament.
Snooker champ
Akash Mohapatra won the first All Odisha Open 6-Red Balls Snooker Championship held at Vintage Club in Bhubaneswar on July 30. He defeated Saoubhagya Behera 7-3 to claim his maiden title. Akash received a cash award of Rs 10,000 along with a trophy while the runner-up was awarded Rs 5,000.
Talented cops
Two sportspersons from Odisha police have been selected by the All-India Police Sports Control Board to represent India in the World Police Games. Lance Naik Bighnaraj Miridia and constable Bonita Lakra, will take part in the games to be held from August 7 to 16 in Los Angles in USA. The Indian team will leave for USA from New Delhi on August 3.
Felicitation
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited recently felicitated Odisha's first international swimmer Pratyasa Ray, a Class-XI student of Buxi Jagabandhu English Medium School of Bhubaneswar.
The 15-year-old has won many national and international medals for the state as well as for the country.
While presenting a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to Pratyasa as a token of appreciation, chairman and managing director A.K. Jha said MCL was focused on promoting sports in the state and planned to support the talented players who were facing difficulties to move ahead in their careers.
