Bhubaneswar, May 2: A college student in Kendrapada district today allegedly committed suicide after being accused and humiliated for allegedly stealing a cellphone.

The incident sparked anger among other students, who ransacked property alleging that the deceased was shamed by the college authorities three days ago when the incident happened which led him to take the extreme step.

The incident took place at the Plus Two Tagore Residential College ended life by hanging himself in the hostel around 1.20 pm today. Ananta was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition where he was declared brought dead.

"The principal and faculty members treated him badly," said one student. The students alleged that the college authorities failed to take him to the hospital resulting in his death. Principal of the college Babaji Charan Moharana denied the allegation. "No such thing happened. We had asked the student to attend classes and nothing else," he said.

Police rushed to the spot and a case has been lodged.
