Students of B.K. College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneswar, put up a colourful spectacle at the institute’s 27th annual art exhibition through some wonderful artworks and dance and music recitals.

The two-day exhibition, which concluded last evening at Jayadev Bhavan, saw diverse creations in various categories — applied art, painting, sculpture, graphic art, Indian style painting, pottery and ceramics. The media ranged from pencil sketches, oil paints, tempera, wood cut print, etching, plywood cut print, stencil print and water colours.

Around 20 sculptures were made from fibreglass, paper, wood, and ceramic and mix media. Final-year student Uma Shankar Dash presented sculptures of a rooster and shrimp made out of metals.

While some took inspiration from deities such as Krishna, Jagannath, Sai Ram and conjured up their manifestations on canvas, others pondered over social issues such as child labour, prostitution, dwindling population of birds and created an imagery with a message.

The students had also organised a cultural function, which began with devotional songs and ended with film songs. Grooving on songs in Marathi and Bengali, the students added extra zing to the soiree. Professors, too, joined them on stage.

Prized cadets

Three cadets of Sambalpur NCC Group received the Rajiv Gandhi Pratibha Puraskar at a function in Bhubaneshwar recently. Karanjeet Gill of Anchal College in Padampur, Suman Bahidar and B. Tejaswini of Women’s College, Sambalpur, were awarded for their overall performance, including the Republic Day Camp in Delhi earlier this year.

The trio were among 85 students of the state who were awarded prizes for talent in various fields. Union minister for chemicals and fertilisers Srikant Jena, Pradesh Congress Committee president Jaydev Jena, Opposition leader Bhupinder Singh, AICC secretary Mirza Arshad Beg and others attended the function.

Formula boy

Amir Ansari, a third-year computer science student of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, has written a science book titled Modern Principle of Heisenberg and Einstein in which he has included some new concepts of physics. Germany’s Lambert Academic Publishing has released the book worldwide.

The book contains the description of all 16 formulae combining the concepts of the two scientists. Born in Ganj-Muradabad village of Uttar Pradesh, Amir wrote the book after extensive research for over two years.

Jolie’s decision

Actress Angelina Jolie’s decision to undergo double mastectomy may have created waves but it might not have been necessary in the first place, said eminent medical researcher Subrat Kumar Acharya.

“False alarms could cause people into doing something which is not required. What is needed is selective screening,” said Acharya, head of gastroenterology department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, while addressing the annual function of the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital.

Quoting an article from a leading medical journal, Acharya said screening of 25,000 women over a 10-year period for breast cancer had led to the detection of only one cancer patient. Thousands of women with a family history of breast cancer are often scared and undergo biopsy, which is not needed, he said.

Award for excellence

The International Education Excellency Award-2013 was bestowed on Amiya Kumar Rath, the vice-chancellor of Dhaneswar Rath Institute of Engineering and Management Studies (Driems) at Tangi, Cuttack. Former deputy prime minister of Thailand Korn Dabbarsansi handed the award to Rath for his contribution to international integration during an international summit organised by Global Achievers Foundation in Bangkok recently.

Among other guests, Indian ambassador to Thailand Anil Wadhwa, ace shooter Jaspal Rana and Jammu and Kashmir MLA Choudhary Zulfikar Ali attended the function.

Rath has earlier bagged several other awards, including the Best Educationist Award from Internal Institute of Education and Management (IIEM), New Delhi, and Rashtriya Vidya Gaurav Gold Medal from Indian Solidarity Council, New Delhi, for outstanding achievements in the field of education and research.

Bank simulation

Ninety students of the Institute of Business and Computer Studies (IBCS), the faculty of management of the SoA University, Bhubaneswar, were presented with certificates after completing the banking simulation laboratory programme introduced in the college.

The IBCS had set up the lab to give students first-hand experience of working in a real bank situation for three months to make them confident of handling business when recruited. University vice-chancellor R.P. Mohanty, Sri Sri University vice-chancellor Kailash Chandra Mishra and general manager of UCO bank N. Sambasiva Rao attended as guests.

Key strategy

International Management Institute, Bhubaneswar, conducted a weeklong programme on general management with the participation of senior government officers from 10 countries sponsored by Union ministry of external affairs. Institute director Ramesh Behl talked about cross-cultural management issues. The programme included classroom lectures, visits to leading industries and tourist sites of the state.

The institute recently hosted a two-day programme on ‘Formulating Effective Strategies for Corporate Social Responsibility’. Executives from leading public sector units and private companies shared their experiences.
