Bhubaneswar, June 22: Two youths were today killed and two others injured when a motorcycle collided with another at Unit-IX under Kharavela Nagar police station jurisdiction.

The deceased have been identified as Abhisek Naik, 19, a native of Jagatsinghpur and Suman, 19, a native of Rayagada district.

"The impact was so severe that one of them was thrown off to a distance and died on the spot. The other boy, who was lying on the road, died after he was crushed by another four-wheeler, coming from behind," said an eyewitness.

The father-son duo, who were on the other motorcycle, also sustained severe injuries and the condition of the youth is stated to be critical.

Driving fast on the roads and removing or altering the silencers to create huge sound have become very common nowadays.

The accident today also occurred as the bikers were driving at a high speed.

Eyewitnesses said the youths were speeding when the motorcycle collided with each other. A number of youngsters can be spotted driving their motorcycles at a high speed.

"Removal of silencers has become a fashion for youngsters. The noise of some of these vehicles can frighten other commuters. The authorities are only penalising riders who ply without helmets. They should also take action against such people who drive so irresponsibly," said Sarbeswar Behera, a senior citizen in the city.

A few youngsters can also be spotted displaying stunts with their motorcycles on city roads at night.

"Authorities should take stringent action against them," said Divakar Barik, a city resident.

Statistics revealed that 166 people died in 565 road mishaps in the city in 2013.

In 2014, 177 died and 516 accidents just took place in the city.

Police said that 60 per cent of total mishaps in the city have taken place on city roads last year.

"According to norms, the maximum sound level of a motorcycle should not cross 95 decibel and the offenders can be penalised Rs 1,000 for violating it. We will shortly start a drive against them," said regional transport officer, Bhubaneswar II, S.K Behera.
