Balangir, Dec.16: A 42-year-old migrant worker died of severe burn injury on Sunday night following a suicide bid after his two sons were killed and wife gang-raped by brick kiln owners and his aides in Hyderabad.

In his detailed statement just before his death, Bibeka Chinda, 42, a resident of Uma village in Boudh district, had said that his two young sons were killed and his wife was gang-raped in front of him. He could not bear the loss and wanted to end his life. He touched a live high-tension wire and sustained severe burn injuries. Severely injured, he managed to board a train to Balangir.

At Balangir railway station on Sunday, other passengers saw him lying in a serious condition and drew the attention of the railway officials. The railway authorities got him admitted to the district headquarters hospital, where he breathed his last after a few hours.

Recalling the horror in Hyderabad just before his death, Bibeka said that he had gone to work in a brick kiln in Hyderabad with his wife and two young sons on December 3. “Within a few days I found that the brick kiln owner was eyeing my wife. When I protested, the kiln owner and his aides thrashed me up and then went to the extent of gang-raping my wife in front of me. To my horror, they also killed my sons, aged 2 and 5 years. I don’t know where is my wife now,” Bibeka said.

Bibeka died late on Sunday night when he was being shifted to the VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla.

The 68-year-old mother of Bibeka, Surya Chinda was shattered after hearing the news. “I can’t believe that they have killed my son and my two grandsons and raped my daughter-in-law. I have lost everything,” she said.

Pradipta Mohapatra of the district headquarters hospital in Balangir, who treated Bibeka, said that the burn injuries were severe. “The injuries were at least four-five day old and had spread all over the body due to lack of treatment. He was in a very critical condition and we wanted to shift him to VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla. But he died while he was being shifted,” the doctor said.

Balangir police have registered a case of unnatural death. State labour and employment minister Prafulla Mallick described the incident as unfortunate and promised to take steps to rescue Bibeka’s wife. He said efforts were being made to know the address where Bibeka was staying in Hyderabad.
