Cuttack May 13: Salepur police started a probe into the incident, in which two motorcycle-borne goons threw acid on a 20-year-old girl near Kazihat on Tuesday evening when she had been on her way to a computer institute.

The victim, a resident of Kusumbi village and a Plus II second-year student, is now undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in the city. Though the police suspect it to be an attack by a jilted lover, the girl has denied having involved in any kind of relationship with anyone.

Senior police officials today met the girl and her family members at the hospital and are trying to find out if they have any clue about the culprits. The police also visited the spot today.

"We have seized a glass, which is suspected to have been used by the criminals to throw acid on the girl. The victim's bag and a shoe have also been recovered from the spot today," said Salepur police station inspector-in-charge Prashant Majhi.

According to the girl's statement, the youths had come on a blue motorcycle and were wearing helmets. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

On Tuesday, the goons had escaped from the spot after committing the crime, while the victim dived into a nearby pond to save herself from the burning sensation. With over 45 per cent burn injuries, the girl was then rushed to Salepur hospital and later shifted to SCB.

"It is for the first time that an acid attack case has been reported at Salepur. We demand a detail probe into the incident, and stern action should be taken against those involved in the ghastly act," local resident Pradip Khuntia.

The incident has evoked sharp reactions, especially from the students' community, in the city. "It is a horrible act. How can we or our parents feel safe while coming out of our homes?" said Swati Pradhan, a student.
