Bhubaneswar, Sept. 29: Police arrested two youths on the charge of posing as "intelligence officers" during patrolling at Khandagiri here last night and seized an orange beacon, an SUV, a toy gun, two walky-talkies and a pair of handcuffs from them.
The accused have been identified as Old Town resident Priya Ranjan Baral, 30, and Balasore native Bijayananada Lakra, 27. The police said Baral posed as a "central intelligence officer".
The duo were held during a blockade at Khandagiri following the robbery of Rs 13 lakh in cash and gold ornaments weighing one kilogram from a UCO Bank branch at Rajmahal Square in the morning.
"We were frisking vehicles when a Tata Sumo with an orange beacon reached the spot. When we asked the occupants of the vehicle about who they were, they identified themselves as police officials. But when pressed further, they fumbled for answers, raising our suspicions. Later, we recovered the articles from the vehicle," said a police officer.
Further investigation revealed that Baral had collected lakhs of rupees from aspirants seeking jobs with the police, posing as a police officer.
"We arrested him in April for cheating and he was released recently on bail. He has duped several youths promising them jobs with the intelligence service," said police commissioner Y.B. Khurania.
