Balasore: The railway police of Balasore, acting on a tip off on Tuesday, raided the Muzaffarpur-Yaswantpur Express and seized bhang (hemp) weighing over 12 quintals, worth around Rs 6 lakh. However, no arrest was made since there was no claimant of the bags. The consignment, while being ferried from Bhagalpur to different places, were found packed in 33 gunny bags and kept underneath the seats of different compartments of the express train. “The consignment is handed over to the excise department,” said Amulya Biswal, officer in-charge RPF, Balasore. A case has been registered under different Sections of the Bihar Orisa Excise Act. Last October, the RPF wing seized nearly 10 quintals of bhang from the same train. Balasore: Vigilance sleuths in Balasore on Tuesday carried out raids at the residence and office of assistant director of the textiles Santosh Parida following allegation of accumulation of disproportionate properties to his known source of income. Apart from his office at Gudipada, the raids were conducted at his residence and native house at Niali and Cuttack, respectively. The search and verifications of documents were under progress, said DSP Nirmal Mohanty. Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday inaugurated a vocational training and supplementary support project for youth at Behrampur. The project titled Prema is a joint initiative of People’s Rural Education Movement and Axis Bank Foundation. It aims to help tribal and dalit youths of Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri and Kandhamal gain requisite skills in areas such as, IT hardware/software, hotel management, driving and automobile service, security guarding, nursing, advanced agriculture, Kewda weaving, and women’s leadership and livelihood (Grihini) programmes. Bhubaneswar: Orissa Tourism on Tuesday launched a training programme on beach water surfing at Ramachandi in Konark. The month long training, the first in the state for surfing, known as Surfing Yogis, is being conducted by the Rangers Adventure Foundation while instructors from Hawaii and Australia have been roped in to guide the amateur surfers and beginners with professional skill. Bhubaneswar: Police on Tuesday busted a sex racket at a Pathological laboratory at Narla in Bhawanipatna. Five persons, including owner of the lab and a woman, were arrested. Two others managed to flee, said police. The accused have been identified as Umesh Chandra Panda, Giridhari Agarwal and Sundar Satpathy. All the five were sent for medical examination.
