Bhubaneswar: The cadets of the State Fire Service Training Institute demonstrated fire safety measures on Thursday for the Fire Safety Week to be celebrated from Friday. The mock drill included rescue exercises in the event of a terrorist attack. On this occasion, a model of the 9/11 terror attack on New York’s World Trade Centre was also enacted. According to the principal of the institute, chief minister Naveen Patnaik will grace the occasion on Saturday. The mock drill showcasing the fire fighting skills of the cadets was part of the preparation for the main event. Bhubaneswar: The state government has formed a committee headed by the chief secretary to review the works under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). The government was perturbed after the Supreme Court has favoured a CBI inquiry into the alleged irregularities on the MNREGS scheme. Bhubaneswar: A six-seater aircraft met with an accident at Tonto airstrip at Barbil in Keonjhar district on Thursday at 3.40pm. Though there was a pilot and two co-pilots in the aircraft, no one was injured in the incident. The plane, owned by a private company, was coming from Ranchi. According to local police, while landing at the airstrip, the pilot lost control and then the aircraft moved towards the airstrip’s boundary wall. The aircraft finally landed on a drain. Bhubaneswar: An elephant was electrocuted on Thursday at Badaghati village under Deogaon block in Balangir district. The elephant died after coming in contact with a low-lying 11KV electricity line. According to officials of the Patnagarh forest range, negligence of the power distribution company is to be blamed for the death. Bhubaneswar: Vehicular traffic between Panikoili and Jajpur Road on NH-215 was disrupted for hours on Thursday following a blockade staged by the Dhanapur villagers in the district. The agitated villagers were demanding compensation for the loss of cattle.
