CWC to clear air over Polavaram project

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned a hearing on the contentious Polavaram project, over which the state and Andhra Pradesh have been at loggerheads, to permit the latter to submit names of independent experts for inspection of the project. The state has been opposing the project on the ground that it would flood areas downstream, whereas Andhra has maintained that the flooding would be as per initial estimates that were taken into account when the project was conceived and cleared. The state has been faulting those estimates made by the Central Water Commission.ith the two states warring over the project, the top court had, at the last hearing on March 3, 2011, sought names of independent experts or organisation to inspect the site to verify their claims and counter-claims.ne or more of these experts are expected to inspect whether work on the project has been done in accordance with the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal award.

Woman dead

Sambalpur: A 32-year-old woman died of burn injuries after she caught fire while cooking. The deceased has been identified as Lokeswari Kalo of Palidihi under Dharuadihi police station in Sundergarh. Police have detained her husband Bajlu Kalo in this connection.

Emar Mutt

Bhubaneswar: Emar Mutt chief priest Maharaj Rajgopal Ramanuj Das, the main accused in the alleged theft of silver bricks from the mutt complex, was on Friday brought on police remand for interrogations. First, he had been interrogated at a secret place and later was taken to the mutt where the interrogation continued. However police refused to give out any details.

Bus service

Bhubaneswar: The Khurda-Bhubaneswar bus service began on Friday. At least 10 buses by the Dream team Sahara group will ply between Khurda and Bhubaneswar at an interval of 15 minutes. Tickets have been priced at Rs 15.

Suicide bid

Bhubaneswar: A women tried to end her life before the sessions court in Rayagada on Friday. Tired of running to the court regarding a case against her husband, the woman had poured kerosene over herself and tried to light a matchstick. However, locals came to her rescue and thwarted her attempts. She has been admitted to a hospital.

Jewel thieves

Bhubaneswar: Gold ornaments worth more than Rs 1 crore were stolen from a jewellery shop at Dhenkanal. The criminals managed to create a hole on the wall of the shop and cut the locker.

Suspension

Bhubaneswar: The sarpanch of Kendupadar panchayat in Aska was suspended on Friday for alleged irregularities in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The sarpanch, Jayaram Kahatei, was found involved in the irregularities in road construction work.

Teacher dies

Bhubaneswar: A teacher of Jangola primary school in Nuapara allegedly died of cardiac arrest after being suspended following detection of malpractice during matriculation exams last. The deceased, Basant Behera, was suspended during an invigilation duty last Wednesday.
