PIL for CBI probe into abduction

Bhubaneswar: A day after the state government registered a case at Chitrakonda police station in connection with the abduction of Malkangiri collector R. Vineel Krishna and junior engineer Pabitra Majhi, a PIL seeking a CBI probe on the kidnapping was filed in Orissa High Court on Tuesday. Trying to make a case for the CBI probe, the petition raised several questions related to the abduction and release of the duo. Manas Kumar Parida, a 34-year-old resident of Bhubanpur under Jagatpur police station area of Cuttack, has filed the PIL. He claims to be a social worker associated with an NGO which is involved in taking up social schemes in rural and tribal areas.

Job protest

Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped the recruitment process of siksha sahayaks (para-teachers) at Rayagada on Tuesday after local residents protested the arrival of huge number of applicants from other districts for the job. As many as 6,200 candidates applied for the para-teacher posts on Tuesday. The rate of unemployment is already high in the region. The protesters demanded that only candidates from the undivided Koraput district should get chance to apply for the posts.

Baby found

BHUBANESWAR: A newborn baby was found abandoned in the New AG colony on Tuesday morning. A woman, Renubala Rout, found the newborn baby lying in a dustbin, while she was on a morning-walk. The male child, wrapped with a piece of cloth, was crying while two dogs were straying there. The woman took the child to a nearby hospital. After preliminary treatment, the child's condition has been said to be stable. The hospital authorities said they had informed police, which would take the necessary steps in this regard. Sources said that Renubala wished to adopt the child.

Arrest

Bhubaneswar: Sambalpur vigilance sleuths on Tuesday registered a case against a clerk, Ananda Saraf, for demanding a gratification of Rs 2,000 from one Manas Ram Bag of Bargarh to process the file for release of his provident fund. A trap was laid and Saraf was caught red-handed. The bribe money was recovered from him.

Road blockade

Bhubaneswar: Residents of the Salia Sahi slum had blocked the road connecting Jayadev Vihar with Ekamra Kanan on Tuesday evening over the death of a 25-year-old woman who was working as a labourer for an ongoing construction work of the new building of city police near 120-Battalion Square. The woman, Sabita Reddy, died in the afternoon while working for the building project as she fell from the roof of the four-storeyed building. But family members of the deceased alleged that they were not informed on time about the death. The slumdwellers suspected foul play and protested against the police by blocking the road in the evening. Later, the Nayapalli police reached there and removed the road blockade. The police have seized her body.
