Bhubaneswar: Tension continued in Rourkela on Tuesday after police resorted to lathicharge at an irate mob that was trying to set ablaze a petrol pump in connection with Mondays’ clash between CRPF jawans and a group of shopkeepers at the Ambagaon area of the town. Three shopkeepers and a CRPF jawan were left critically injured in the incident. They are being treated at the Ispat General hospital. Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in the area. Bhubaneswar: Centurion Institute of Technology, Paralakhemundi, on Tuesday witnessed tensed moments after irate students came out to the streets with various demands. The students demanded their inclusion under the Biju Patnaik University of Technology. They also protested against suspension of 11 students of their institute by the authorities. As the unrest spread, the students also attacked a few mediapersons. The Media Unity for Freedom of Press has condemned the attack. Bhubaneswar: Rights activists on Tuesday put out an alert to consumers in the state about dangers of genetically modified foods as reflecting in numerous scientific studies. They urged the citizens to reject the entry of such foods into the country and opt for organic foods to avoid toxic genetically modified foods and chemical pesticides. They also urged the state government to utilise the new regulatory procedure initiated by Jairam Ramesh in seeking state government's permission before open-air field trials are conducted. Bhubaneswar: The BJP youth wing on Tuesday launched 'Mahanadi banchao' demonstration in Sambalpur demanding purification of the polluted Mahanadi water. The water of Mahanadi is not fit for consumption and has been causing skin and stomach diseases, alleged the activists. The authorities have assured them to begin work in 15 days. Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Special Court on Tuesday passed orders of confiscation of property amounting to Rs 15,48,165, including a double-storeyed building at Jagamara, a plot in Cuttack city, gold ornaments and bank deposits of former IAS officer Sanjib Kumar Ray. Ray served as additional secretary to the government cooperation department. On January 25, he was convicted in a case of acquiring assets disproportionate to his income. Bhubaneswar: Met officials on Tuesday predicted thundershowers, accompanied with wind at a few places in the state. As per the latest radar observations, a wind speed, reaching 60 to 80km per hour is likely to affect Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur, an official release said.
