Race for VC post

Bhubaneswar: Governor S.C. Jamir will interview three candidates for the vice-chancellor’s post at Berhampur University on July 29 as J.K. Mohapatra’s tenure ended on Friday. Revenue divisional commissioner (south) B.C. Mahapatra took over as interim vice-chancellor. The term of Nilakantha Pati, vice-chancellor of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya, Puri, ends on Saturday and Puri collector N.K. Nayak has assumed interim charge. Jamir will interview candidates for the post on August 6.

Tender move

Bhubaneswar: The tender process for a new government medical college in Balangir has started, said chief minister Naveen Patnaik, while chairing a meeting on establishment of 11 new medical colleges in the state. Apart from a health university, the colleges will be set up by the state government in Baripada, Balasore and Koraput, apart from PSUs such as Nalco, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and the National Thermal Power Corporation.

Bhubaneswar: Firebrand officer of the state Aparajita Sarangi is going on central deputation as joint secretary of land resources in Union rural development ministry. Sarangi is the secretary of the state textiles and handlooms department.

Five held

Bhubaneswar: Police arrested five persons hailing from Jharkhand for allegedly posing as Maoists and trying to extort money from industrial units in Sundergarh. The accused had formed a group to extort money from local traders.

Arrest

Balangir: Police arrested four persons, including a teenager, involved in many cases of theft and highway robbery at Patnagarh and seized a gun and magazines from them. The accused were remanded in judicial custody after their bail plea rejected.

Sting death

Balasore: An octogenarian man died after being stung by honey bees at Alijanga village in the Patkura police station limits of the district on Friday. Police said the deceased, identified as Kesab Barik, 82, was doing some work at the backyard of his house when the bees attacked him.
