Activists ransack Tangi block office

Cuttack: Congress activists on Wednesday ransacked the Tangi block office. They were protesting against irregularities in the public distribution system at Tangi-Choudwar block. Over 200 workers barged into the office and ransacked chairs, tables, telephones, fax machine and computers. The activists claimed that recently, 618 fake ration cards were recovered from a sarpanch's office, but no action was taken despite investigation carried out by the district collector.

Arrest

Bhubaneswar: Sambalpur vigilance sleuths on Wednesday arrested Rajgangpur tehsildar Saroj Kumar Biswal for demanding an illegal gratification of Rs 5,000 from one Rajesh Sethi to issue a temporary permit to lift stones from the quarry. In course of the investigation, a trap was laid and Biswal was caught.

Motorcycle gang

Bhubaneswar: Three bike lifters from the city were arrested and 11 motorcycles were seized from them. Police said the leader of the gang, Deepak Sahu, along with a minor, Dasarath Dalei, have been arrested along with one Rabindra Dakua. The gang had been operating at different parts of the city. They lifted motorcycles from parking lots, malls and public places.

Agitation

Bhubaneswar: Students of the Purushottam School of Engineering in Rourkela on Wednesday locked up the principal inside his office alleging that he had misbehaved with some female students. The students also ransacked the college, damaging its infrastructure. The situation was brought under control after the police intervention.

Roadblock

Bhubaneswar: Residents of Sambalpur on Wednesday blocked the national highway here for several hours, protesting against the inaction of the Sambalpur municipality authorities to clean the drains of the town. The overflowing drains were resulting in health problems in the area, said a resident. The blockade was removed after three hours when the authorities promised immediate action.

Ganja haul

Kendrapara: Police on Wednesday seized nearly one kg of cannabis and arrested two drug peddlers in this connection. The contraband was of an estimated value of Rs one lakh, police said, adding that the drug peddlers confessed to the crime. They were later forwarded to court under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs And Psychotropic Substances act.

Exhibition

Bhubaneswar: Paintings by 28 artists during the National Artists’ Camp held earlier this month at the Governor House would be exhibited at the Regional Art Centre in the city from Thursday. he two-day exhibition, organised by Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, will be inaugurated by Governor M.C. Bhandare and tourism and culture minister Prafulla Samal. The art works will be displayed at the proposed art gallery that is to come up soon at Governor House, said the organisers.
