Focus on forest cases

Bhubaneswar: Chief secretary J.K. Mohapatra held a videoconference with public prosecutors and assistant public prosecutors and directed them to expedite long-pending compoundable forest cases against tribal people, apart from forest encroachment cases. They have been asked to enlist cases to be taken up at the national level lok adalat on Sunday and those to be disposed of under Motor Vehicles Act, Police Act and other cases related to seizure of liquor under Excise Act.

Budget meet

Bhubaneswar: The state’s first supplementary budget for 2013-14 will be approved at the state cabinet meeting on Saturday. The budget will be presented on the second day of the winter session of the Assembly beginning November 28.

Women safety

Bhubaneswar: A consultation organised by State Commission for Women, in partnership with the women and child development department and United Nations Population Fund, discussed ensuring safe spaces for women and strengthening legal frameworks and existing mechanisms, to bridge the gap between legislation and enforcement and address sexual harassment at work. This is being done to formulate a State Women and Girl Policy.

Archery

Bhubaneswar: Four players from the state have qualified for the 36th Junior National Archery Championship in Assam from November 23. Ranjit Naik, Saraban Kumar Mandangi (both from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences), Raj Kumar Naik and Rajesh Madhi (from SAI-HAL, Sunabeda) will take part in the six-day event.

Gutka raid

Bhubaneswar: Police cracked down on a clandestine gutka factory in the dense forests of Nayagarh. The team seized gutka-manufacturing machinery and raw materials. Two persons were arrested.

Scholarships

Bhubaneswar: Ten meritorious students, five each from the Biju Patnaik University of Technology and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, have been selected for the annual Posco TJ Park Foundation Scholarship for 2013-14.
