Freedom fighter dies

Bhubaneswar: Veteran freedom fighter, writer and former minister Nityananda Mohapatra died of old age-related ailments here on Tuesday. He is survived by his son. He was under treatment at a private hospital here for the past few days.orn in 1912, Mohapatra was a recipient of Kendriya Sahitya Akademi and Orissa Sahitya Akademi awards. He was a member of state Assembly from 1957 to 1970. He was a minister in the Swatantra Jana Congress ministry during 1967-70. He was editor of Odia magazine Dagara. He was imprisoned thrice during the British Raj. His last rites were performed at Swargadwar in Puri on Tuesday

ECoR award

Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway on Tuesday bagged the Traffic Transportation Shield for its performance in loading and transportation by the Union railway ministry for the year 2011-12. Railway minister Mukul Roy presented the shield to general manager of East Coast Railway Indra Ghosh at an event in New Delhi on occasion of the 57th Railway Week.

Life term

Balasore: A fast-track court of Balasore has on Tuesday awarded life term to three persons involved in a murder in September, 2008. The convicts Kalia Singh, 26, Chagulia Singh, 23, and Narayan Majhi, 25, of Madalbazar of Remuna had allegedly killed Sambhu Singh over a family dispute.

Accident

Jajpur: Two persons were killed and three others injured, one of them seriously, when the tractor in which they were travelling skidded off road on Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Chaitanya Charan Parida, 45, and Hemalata Parida, 40, of Neulpur village in the district. The tractor was returning to Chandikhol when the mishap occurred. The injured were rushed to a local government hospital from where one person was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated. The tractor’s driver fled from the spot soon after the mishap.

Techie held

Cuttack: Vigilance officials on Tuesday registered a case against junior engineer Gouranga Charan Behera of Bhubana Block in Dhenkanal district for demanding an illegal gratification of Rs 5,000 from Kodandadhar Rout for issuing a cheque for Rs 48,000 in his favour towards construction of Mathakhoksa Road.In the course of investigation, a trap was laid and Behera was caught red handed. He has been arrested.

Met forecast

Bhubaneswar: Met officials on Tuesday forecast thundersquall during the next 48 hours. Thundersquall accompanied by hail and gusty surface wind with a speed of up to 60 to 70km per hour may occur at one or two places over several districts of the state, said an official release. Accordingly, all the district authorities have been advised to take precautionary measures.
