Scam accused in jail

Bhubaneswar: Deepak Gupta, the prime accused in the Rs 1,800-crore Uliburu mining scam, was on Wednesday sent to judicial custody till September 24. On the other hand, Orissa High Court extended the date for interim protection against arrest for his wife and parents from September 11 to 16.

Maoist killed

Bhubaneswar: An alleged Maoist was killed in an encounter between the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the rebels near Kalyasingpur in Rayagada district. e is yet to be identified. Police said the encounter took place when a DVF unit combing the nearby forest zone came face-to-face with a group of Maoists who had set up a camp there.

Stabbed

Berhampur: A Class IX student of Upendra Bhanja High School was stabbed to death by a Class VII boy of the same school in Gamundi village at Bhanja Nagar on Tuesday night. Amar Nayak had rebuked his junior for complaining to their tuition teacher about his habit of playing cards. The junior then brought a knife and stabbed Amar. He has been sent to the juvenile home in Berhampur.

Suspension

Paradip: School and mass education officials suspended the headmaster and three others of Chikinia High School on charges of dereliction of duty in the wake of a15-year-old student's death during immersion of Ganesh idol in Hansua river. No teacher had accompanied the group of 25 students to the bathing ghat.

One held

Cuttack: Another accused in the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Tigiria was arrested on Wednesday. Kabat Senapati was arrested near Badambadi area. Police said that six persons had allegedly gang raped the victim after abducting her on September 9. Key accused Jaga Behera has already been held.

Help raped

Bhubaneswar: A 35-year-old domestic help was allegedly raped at gunpoint in Samantarapur on Tuesday night. The maid on Wednesday lodged a complaint at Mahila police station. The police have started an investigation into the incident.
