Robbers loot lakhs

Berhampur: Robbers have looted Rs 12 lakh from the manager of a cement factory at Gobara near Gangapur on Wednesday. The goons have also fired three rounds of bullets and hurled three bombs while committing the crime. The incident took place when robbers followed the vehicle in which K. Ramakrishana and one of his colleague were travelling and opened fire to loot the money. Police have started an investigation in this connection.

Demonstration

Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of candidates for the selection of junior clerks on Tuesday held demonstrations in front of the collectorate alleging large-scale irregularities in the selection test. The candidates alleged that several employees of the collectorate were involved in the irregularities. The selection test for the recruitment of 80 junior clerks had been conducted on May 18, 2011 and the result was published recently. There were over 3,500 applicants for the appointment of 80 junior clerks.

Compensation

Berhampur: Villagers of Phasipada in Ganjam district on Tuesday demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the next of kin of two persons who were killed in police firing on Saturday. The villagers put up these demands while the district administration held a peace meeting in the clash-hit village.

Raid

Bhubaneswar: The vigilance officials raided the houses and office room of a junior engineer of the Public Health Engineering Organisation on Wednesday on allegations of accumulating disproportionate assets. The engineer was identified as Ashok Kumar Das who works in Palasuni division. Das owned one double-storeyed building and four homestead plots in Cuttack worth Rs 45.47 lakh. The total cost of his movable and immovable properties was Rs 74.22 lakh.

New leader

Angul: An independent candidate became the new chairperson of the municipal body, despite the Congress having an absolute majority in the Angul municipal council. “The independent candidate Sukanti Dash polled 16 votes and defeated her rival Congress nominee Pratima Parida by 10 votes,” said additional district magistrate Debraj Senapati who conducted the elections.

Youth dead

Bhubaneswar: One Susanta Sahu from Patapur in Ganjam district died as a train ran over him near Lingaraj passenger halt on the city outskirts. Government railway police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.

Time to reopen

Bhubaneswar: Xavier Public School at Khandagiri will open on Thursday after it was closed indefinitely on Monday. The parents and some teachers had held protests in front of the Khandagiri police station after the school was closed without informing them.
