Cuttack, June 13: A mobile blood donation camp which aims at “door-to-door” blood collection, has been launched by a voluntary organisation here in the city.

“Our main objective is to encourage blood donation and at the same time help the people donate blood at their convenience,” said Ratan Sinha, secretary of Srushtee and S.N. Memorial Helpline.

According to Sinha, there is usually a “crisis” of blood for thalassemia and other patients during summer. Moreover, as all the schools and colleges are closed, there is usually a fall in the blood collection during this period.

“It is a good initiative to collect blood by visiting people at their homes. This would certainly help those who fail to donate blood in camps,” said Suniti Mohanty, a homemaker from Santasahi. Suniti, along with her husband Pradip, donated blood and also encouraged their neighbours and relatives to donate blood.

“This will help collect blood more consistently,” said Kameswar Rao, another local resident. The voluntary organisation believes that many people can donate blood if such kind of door-to-door collection was done. The mobile blood donation camp would continue for seven days in the city.

The organisation would also launch similar blood donation camps at Bhubaneswar from tomorrow. Twenty units of blood were collected by the organisation here in the city today. The organisation, Srushtee, has been conducting blood donation camps since 2001 and so far it has collected more than 3,000 units of blood.

On June 3, Srushtee had organised a blood donation camp in which a newly-wed couple donated blood. The couple, Laltendu Dalbehera and his wife Anita, had agreed to donate blood to make their marriage memorable.
