Bhubaneswar: This power couple from Puri has two Guinness world records to their name.
Durga Charan Mishra, 66, and his wife Jyotshna Mishra, 57, have created a Guinness world record for the longest journey by scheduled public transport in a single country. The certificate from the United Kingdom reached the couple on Wednesday. In 2014, the couple set the record for the longest journey by car in a single country.
Durga Charan has to his credit many solo and couple bike expeditions with many of them making national records and one even a world record. Durga Charan and his wife travelled 29,119 kilometres across the country from February 13 to March 30. With the achievement, the couple broke the previous record of a Romanian couple who had travelled 9,261km.
The Mishra couple had also made a world record by travelling 21,146km on a Bullet motorcycle in 2013. The couple recalls that the journey, though exciting, wasn't easy.
"We travelled by government buses and passenger trains. We halted at railway stations and had prepared a route chart. We feel more youths should come forward and take up the challenge. It is an expression of freedom and the spirit of exploring the world around us," said Durga Charan, a retired central government employee.
They began their journey from Puri by train.
In the 42 days, they travelled to various states - such as Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala.
A two-member panel was keeping a close watch on their movements through global positioning system. Their son Anupam is a film director in Mumbai and daughter Anusha lives in California.
"It is not only determination that works for us but also the support of our children. They also keep an eye on us through GPS," said Jyotshna.
They said that they would shortly apply the Guinness World Records authorities to approve them as the only couple in world to set two records.
