Bhubaneswar, June 12: The state government announced today that no additional teachers would be recruited in government colleges that had applied for enhancement of seats and opening of new subjects and streams.
The government had recently announced to increase at least one lakh seats in various Plus Two colleges across the state.
Besides, it was also clarified that the colleges had to manage without any additional funds and infrastructure development, putting the educational institutes in a piquant situation.
"The state government has been pleased to accord approval for seat enhancement in government colleges from this academic session but the higher education department should make it clear that no additional teachers will be appointed to meet the need and the workload must be managed with the existing strength of faculty," read a letter from the government.
At least 29 colleges across the state had applied for increase of seats and addition of new courses.
"We were very happy when the government announced increase of seats. But with this condition, it seems we made a mistake by asking for extra seats," said the principal of a junior college.
"We are already struggling with shortage of teaching staff and bad laboratories. If the announcement meant nothing, why did they do it in the first place?" said the principal.
