Bhubaneswar, May 6: After making Bollywood divas and heartthrobs dance to his beats, dancer-choreographer Terence Lewis will soon be in the capital to teach a step or two to the dance-loving people here.

The 11-day programme, “Anybody Can Dance At Any Age” is organised by city-based dance institute Mzone Academy that is headed by one of Terence’s students Mandakini Jena. The fun summer workshop is an attempt to give the dancers as well as the non-professionals a firm foothold in the basics of Western and few traditional dance forms.

The workshop by Terence and his troupe will include dance forms such salsa, hip-hop, jazz, Bollywood masala, fusion as well as pure classical dance such as Bharatnatyam.

“Though the city has a long lineage of great dancers, we are still stuck to just one form of dance. By the grace of globalisation we are now aware of other dance styles but never got the courage or even teachers who can teach us the right moves. Thus I came up with the idea of inviting my mentor from Dance India Dance days, Terence Sir, to encourage the dancers,” said Mandakini.

During the workshop, the professionals will get an insight of the advanced nuances and steps such as the mojito, salsa mia, novento and salsa dip, which are advanced dance steps of salsa. On the hip-hop style one gets an opportunity to get acquainted with the knee slide, body wave, scuba hip-hop and much more. Those who are interested to learn the basics of traditional dance form may also brush up on tillana, angikam and alarippu.

The workshop is open to one and all. “Our main target is to erase the shyness and bring forth the real hidden dancer. We are hoping to attract a large number of women in their forties and fifties to the workshop,” said Mandakini.

Terence is acclaimed for his finesse in contemporary and neo-classical dance forms. He is a regular face in several international broadway musicals and has bagged numerous awards in his short career span.

“Terence Lewis is a big name in the world of dance and we have already received a good number of dancers interested in the workshop. We are also planning to organise a show exclusively by Terence Sir as a treat to the city,” said Mandakini.

The workshop starts early in June.
