Bhubaneswar, Dec. 15: Students' wing of the state Congress today accused Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation mayor Ananta Narayan Jena of being involved in a sex scandal and demanded his resignation.
The allegation was based on a video, which has gone viral on YouTube, in which a person purported to be Jena is shown getting intimate with a young man and a woman. Leaders of the Congress students' wing have alleged that the boy in the video, The Telegraph has not verified its authenticity, was an engineering student who died under mysterious circumstances in May this year.
The issue also rocked the Assembly with Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati raising it in the House. Jena, on his part, refuted all the allegations saying the person in the video was not him.
The 3.50-minute video shows a man whom the Congress alleges to be Bhubaneswar mayor in a compromising position with a young man and a woman. State student Congress president Itish Pradhan, who threatened to launch an agitation if the mayor did not step down, said that the fourth-year engineering student who features in the video, died in his sleep on May 5 after a late night party with friends. He was rushed to Capital Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
During investigation, police found from his friends that the boy used to buy drugs from a peddler.
The background commentary in the leaked video reveals that the whole duration of the video was one hour of which 20 minutes are shot with lights on. On YouTube, the video has been compressed to 3.50 minutes.
Who uploaded the video on YouTube, however, remains a question. Student Congress leaders alleged that the mayor had 'used' the boy and later got rid of him fearing blackmail.
However, Jena categorically denied the charge. He told The Telegraph that he had nothing to do with the video.
"The person in the video has a big belly unlike me. The students' wing of the Congress is making a hue and cry about it with a political motive. I am ready to face any kind of probe," he said. The mayor has lodged a complaint at Capital police station.
