Bhubaneswar, June 8: A 24-year-old man allegedly raped a 20-year-old college student near a railway coach repair workshop in Mancheswar yesterday evening after luring her to the city on the pretext of giving her a job.

The woman, a Plus Three arts student in Kendrapara, managed to escape from the clutches of the man by hurling stones at him.

Police said the youth, a resident of a village close to that of the woman, had called her and her mother to Bhubaneswar saying that he had found a job for her.

"He asked us to go to Rasulgarh. From there, he took me with him to Mancheswar area, asking my mother to return to my native place. Later, he took me to an isolated place and raped me. He also threatened to strangulate me if I dared resist or raise my voice," the survivor reportedly told the police.

The police have arrested the accused, Amar Jena.

After being raped, the woman injured Jena by hurling stones at him. Then she escaped from the spot by jumping off a 10-ft high boundary wall.

"I climbed a tree and managed to scale the boundary wall. I suffered a fracture in my leg after jumping the boundary wall," said the survivor.

Mancheswar residents spotted the woman running for her life on the road.

"She was shouting for help and took shelter at a roadside shop. We immediately informed the police and they rescued the girl. The girl was so panic-stricken that she was unable to speak properly," said an eyewitness.

The cops later visited the spot with her and recovered her mobile phone from there.

Deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi said they had registered a case and started a probe. "The medical examination of the victim has been completed and we have also recorded her statement," he said.

Two killed

At least two persons were killed and about 40 others suffered grave injuries after a bus in which they were travelling collided head-on with a tractor on National Highway-16 near Balugaon in Khurda district on Wednesday night. The bus, which was on its way to Jeypore from Bhubaneswar, collided with a tractor that was approaching from the opposite direction. The bus overturned under the impact of the collision killing two passengers and injuring many others.
