Bhubaneswar, May 24: Unidentified goons, who kidnapped businessman Deepak Swami at gunpoint last night, released him near Big Bazaar at Patia late this evening.
Swami was kidnapped last night from his apartment in Infocity.
Police are now interrogating him to find clues about the entire incident.
His family members claimed that they had not received any call for ransom and police are also clueless about what happened last night.
It is suspected that the 46-year-old entrepreneur was kidnapped by goons for not paying up loans that he had taken from a few people for his business.
The police said six criminals allegedly abducted the businessman at gunpoint while he was standing in front of his apartment.
"His mobile phone had remained switched off since last night," said Swami's father, a retired employee of a Coal India subsidiary.
Investigation by the police revealed that Swami had started dealing in tiles in 2011.
He had set up two tile-manufacturing factories in Cuttack and Balasore.
"He had borrowed more than Rs 1 crore from various banks and individuals, but failed to repay them. His factories have been shut since 2014," said a police officer.
The police said Swami's family lived in Laxmi Sagar before moving to a new apartment at Infocity six months ago.
"His family members told us that a few people from whom Swami had borrowed money had been threatening him for refunds," said a police officer.
"Three teams have been formed to probe the case," said inspector in charge of Infocity police station Banita Moharana.
