Bhubaneswar, March 26 : Ashutosh Behura, a faculty member of KIIT University, has developed a 'gesture mouse' with unique remote control characteristics loaded in it. He has already initiated the preliminary process to patent his product.
Behura, who teaches computer science at the School of Computer Engineering of the KIIT University, conceptualised the idea in 2012 and made the final prototype in 2014.
'I have developed this perfect working model and have applied for patent with the Intellectual Property Right (IPR) Cell, Calcutta, earlier this year. The preliminary papers were filed and the entire process will take some time and once I receive a patent number, I can transfer my technology to a company interested in producing it as a gadget,' Behura told The Telegraph .
When asked how the new gesture mouse, named 'gesto-mouse' will be different from other products available in the market, Behura said: 'Gesto-mouse is not just a cordless mouse. It uses human hand with a ring like attachment worn on a finger. It contains sensors which co-ordinates the movements of the hand and reflects it accordingly on the computer screen. However, it needs no base and can be used swiping the finger even in thin air or from a far away position from the computer.'
'While the ring like device worn by the user in the prototype is about the size of one cubic inch, it weighs around 50 to 75 gram. Though the prototype was manufactured with an investment of around Rs 10 lakh, once mass production starts, the technology can be available with the device costing around Rs 2,400 to Rs 2,500 in the market,' said the inventor.
Behura said leading computer peripheral manufacturer in the country i-Ball has shown deep interest in the product. 'I am not in a position to transfer my technology to the company as I am yet to get the patent number. Once the patent is done, I will be more than happy to transfer, so it can be used by public,' he said.
Chief executive officer of KIIT's technology business incubator, Mrutyunjay Suar said: 'Gesto-mouse is a close competitor of a product developed by a Canadian firm, but the former scores over the latter in many areas as it needs only a ring like structure to be worn and does not adhere to a surface while in use. The market price of the product will be highly affordable.'
