Sainik School, Bhubaneswar, is unlike other schools in the state. It was founded in 1962, primarily with the objective of minimising regional differences in officers’ cadre in the defence services and to develop a military inclination among students. The residential boys’ school follows the CBSE pattern of syllabus.

“We are concerned about a child’s holistic development, rather than concentrating more on academic excellence. We believe in physical and mental development, ingraining traditional values and more important, the independence and individuality of a student. By the time they pass out from our school, they are ready to lead,” said principal, Captain K.S. Noor.

Before assuming the charge of principal in June 2009, Noor was director of education, Indian Navy, Delhi. “When I joined here, the school was not in a very good shape. I was determined to revamp the scenario and with the state government’s support, there has been tremendous improvement in the last two years in everything ranging from academics to infrastructure,” he said, adding that the number of students from the school making it into the National Defence Academy (NDA) has increased significantly.

The school is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. “Our school has a glorious history. So far, we have contributed over 600 defence officers and others are also doing well in their chosen fields. Our Old Boys’ Association is also very dynamic. Although the school was not doing well a few years ago, I can now proudly say that it is back on track,” Noor said.
