
Bhubaneswar, April 10: With the wedding season already under way and a couple of Odia festivals lined up, handloom exhibition at Kasturba Nari Mahal couldn't have been organised at a better time.
The exhibition titled Weavers from Tamil Nadu has put up on display products of Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Society Ltd, popularly known as Co-optex.
The five-day fair began today.
The textiles of Tamil Nadu are known for their rich quality fabric, be it cotton or silk. Saris from the region are extremely popular across the country and Bhubaneswar is no different. Shoppers here are happy to have got an opportunity to explore the options in saris.
From the famous Kancheepuram silk that every woman wishes to have in her wardrobe to Arani silk that are known for their lustre and gleam, the expo has brought a wide range of items for women buyers.
Pure silk and zari fabric-based clothing such as salwar suits, drapes and stoles are also available in plenty. Among other products displayed at the exhibition are Coimbatore cotton saris, bed spreads, lungies, towels and readymade dresses.
"The collection is lovely. There are a couple of stores in the city that offer pure South Indian silk but so many varieties under one roof and at discounted price make it all the more attractive. Moreover, this is a wedding season and Pana Sankranti is also coming up, so, it's the right place to visit for shoppers," said Arundhati Das, a homemaker.
The price of the saris vary from Rs 150 to Rs 30,000.
Co-optex has 203 showrooms across the country and its annual turnover is around Rs 1,000 crore.
"It is basically engaged in marketing of handloom fabrics produced in Tamil Nadu. Co-optex is a household name and one will get a unique range of fabrics in hundreds of designs, colours and textures. Each product here displays the artistry and craftsmanship of weavers of our state," said an official of the organising group.
