Cuttack, May 6: A contractor was injured in a firing incident today, which has raised questions about the efficacy of police patrolling in the city.
The incident occurred near the official residence of director-general of police Prakash Mishra at the posh Cantonment Road in the afternoon. The residences of many eminent personalities, senior police officers and the Chief Justice are also located nearby.
Sibananda Bhagat, 31, the contractor, suffered a bullet injury in his left thigh.
“I was returning home along with my friend Pavitra Nayak after completing a tender related work at the office of the superintending engineer (Eastern Circle) near Barabati Stadium. About 10 youths on five motorcycles intercepted us near the residence of the director general of police and fired at us,” said Bhagat.
“We had received threats in the past from various goons. They were pressurising us not to take part in the e-tender process for the project,” said Nayak.
Deputy commissioner of police S. Praveen Kumar said that the matter was being investigated.
