Bhubaneswar, May 16: Move over stag parties, now girls also want to have their share of fun as they kiss goodbye to single life.
Odia weddings are known to be a traditional affair but brides-to-be in the city are shedding all inhibitions and raising a toast to their singlehood by partying hard with their girl pals. Shaking a leg to groovy Bolly tunes, downing a few cocktails and indulging in revelry commonly figure in the bachelorette party itinerary.
“Why should boys have all the fun,” says Subhashree Hati, 26, now married to Odia actor Partha Sarathi Ray.
Reminiscing her fun night with her sisters and close friends at a city hotel, the vivacious schoolteacher said: “I had asked all of them to wear western outfits. Partha was also there and we danced for more than four hours. But we avoided alcohol and did not try anything wild because the idea was just to have fun and not make anybody uncomfortable,” said Subhashree, referring to the usual hen parties which involve male strippers and other raunchy elements.
Getting jiggy on the disco floor was not Survi Singh’s idea of celebrating her soon-to-expire single status. The 29-year-old techie, who got married last week, had a girls’ night out at her friend’s farmhouse on the city outskirts before she got hitched.
“My friends planned the entire thing but kept me in the loop. They pampered me a lot and organised everything according to my tastes, starting from the cake flavour to the dress code. We watched romantic comedies all night,” said Survi.
Some prefer their party with their girl gang at home or a friend’s house. “Everybody agreed on having the party at my place because I stay alone. It was an impromptu plan, just three days before Shilpa’s wedding. We ordered food and alcohol. Shilpa got a little tipsy and told us a lot of her secrets,” said Aishwarya Patnaik, 25, a corporate employee about her childhood friend.
There are also those who like stretching their hen’s bash by heading to scenic locations for a week or longer.
“I, along with seven friends, hiked to Goa two months before my marriage to de-stress. We went rafting and for nature walks, met many interesting people and had some amazing seafood. I wish I could turn the clock back,” said Shivani, 26, a homemaker, who got married last December.
