Girl resists rape bid, assaulted

A 22-year-old man allegedly attacked a minor girl with a sharp metallic weapon after she resisted his attempt to rape her at a village in Binjharpur police station area of the district on Thursday evening. The incident happened when the girl was returning home alone after her tuition class.

Jajpur: A 22-year-old man allegedly attacked a minor girl with a sharp metallic weapon after she resisted his attempt to rape her at a village in Binjharpur police station area of the district on Thursday evening. The incident happened when the girl was returning home alone after her tuition class.

The girl received serious injuries on various parts of her body and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. From there, she was later shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Jajpur as her condition deteriorated.

The accused - Rakesh Jena of Aradapala village - is at large. The cops are raiding various places to nab him. As the news of the assault spread, tension prevailed in the area and irate villagers took to the streets demanding immediate arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment to him. The tension subsided only after Binjharpur police assured the protesters of immediate action.

According to a complaint filed by the father of the girl with the local police, the 15-year-old Class-X student was returning home alone after her tuition class on Thursday evening when the accused attempted to rape her on the road.

When she resisted his bid, the accused attacked her with a sharp weapon, injuring her grievously, said Suchitra Birjya Das, inspector in charge of Binjharpur police station.

Local people rushed to the spot hearing the girl's screams and the accused fled from the scene.
