Cuttack, Oct. 8: The Budah Ganesh Puja organisers in the city will have to complete their immersion rituals without taking out any procession or using any band as they have missed the October 2 deadline set by Orissa High Court.

Unlike the Ganesh idols, which come up in other puja mandaps across the city, the organisers of Budah Ganesh Puja at 14 localities take out processions for idol immersion after observing the dutia ghanta ritual over a fortnight following Ganesh Chaturthi.

Among them will be the Budah Ganesh idol of Madan Mohan Samiti at Bania Sahi - which has been observing the immersion tradition after the dutia ghanta ritual for eight generations now.

Cuttack Budah Ganesh Puja Committee president Sibendra Hati said: "We had no other way as immersion after dutia ghanta ritual is an age-old tradition."

"We have decided to observe immersion ceremony on October 11 (Sunday) without taking out any procession or using any band along with the idols," said Hati.

The issue of Ganesh idol immersion had reached the high court after it had been alleged by way of a PIL that there was no specific date or day for idol immersion and the procession went on for days together. The court was "shocked and surprised to learn from the Cuttack deputy commissioner of police that more than 1,100 licences were being issued for taking out procession for immersion of Ganesh idols in the city, which takes place over several days causing traffic congestion".

Acting on it, the high court had fixed September 20, 27 and October 2 for immersion of all Ganesh idols in the city keeping in view the fact that those were public holidays.

While all the Ganesh idols of various localities completed their immersion ritual on the assigned dates in phases, the organisers of 14 Budah Ganesh idols moved the high court for modification of the September 16 order to enable them to take out immersion procession after observing their traditional dutia ghanta ritual on October 5.

But, the court rejected their plea.
