
Bhubaneswar, April 2: Four youths were arrested today for allegedly stealing an Uber car at gunpoint from Bharatpur on the city outskirts on March 21.
Police said one of the accused, Pintu Digal, was also wanted in a March 2016 case of rape and dacoity at G. Udayagiri in Kandhamal district.
The accused have been identified as Sandeep Nayak, 27, Pintu Digal, 25, Jitendra Sahu, 31, and Sivil Kumar Priyadarshan, 31, all natives of Kandhamal district. The police said Sivil Kumar had completed his MBA degree from a management college in the city and was currently working as sales manager with a mobile company in Bhubaneswar.
The police have seized a stolen Swift Dzire car from Bengal apart from a stolen motorcycle from them.
"After stealing the Uber car, they had gone to Bengal and sold it to a middlemen for Rs 1.2 lakh. They returned to the state the same day after selling the car," said a police official.
The victim - 37-year-old Dilip Kumar Pradhan - had alleged that someone called Dinesh had booked the car from Sum hospital around 10.45pm on March 21.
"He asked me to drop him at Bharatpur on the city outskirts. After travelling for a few minutes, he asked me to slow down. As soon as I reduced the speed of the car, three men came forward and asked me to come out of the car. When I refused to do so, they assaulted me. Then they threatened me with a gun and took off with the car," Pradhan had said.
Pradhan had also accused the carjackers of taking away Rs 25,000 in cash that was kept in the car along with original bank documents, a passbook, an ATM card and his identity proof. Deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi said Digal was involved in six criminal cases at Nayapalli police station. "The gang members were not using the mobile phone with which they had booked the car. We had constituted a special squad to nab them. The antecedents of the other accused are being verified," said Bhoi.
The police said apart from Priyadarshan, all other accused stayed at various slums of the city.
