Bhubaneswar, July 19: Hundreds of farmers today dumped their vegetable produce and milk on National Highway-5 and National Highway-16 at Chandikhol Square demanding minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.

The NH-5 connects Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, while NH-16 joins Duburi and Paradip.

The chief of Nava Nirman Krushak Sangathan, Akshya Kumar, said: "The farmers have been frustrated over the years as they are not getting minimum support price for their produce. Moong, grams and groundnuts are being sold at less than Rs 30 per kg."

Farmers alleged that they were not getting minimum support price for milk either. "While one litre of bottled water costs Rs 20 here, farmers get only Rs 24 to Rs 26 per litre of milk. How can they survive?" Kumar said.

The farmers gathered at 11am at Chandikhol Square and demanded that the government take action. When no officials turned up, the farmers blocked the road from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the road, throwing traffic out of gear.

Later, the Jajpur district collector reached the spot. "We demand right price for the produce. The district administration has promised to look into the demand by July 22," said Kumar.
