Paradip, April 28: A 35-year-old man allegedly beat his 80-year-old grandmother to death at Prasanapur village within the limits of Jagatsinghpur district’s Balikuda police station.

The assailant, Balaram Swain, 35, had fled after committing the crime. He was allegedly an alcoholic and had a history of creating nuisance in the public.

The shocking incident occurred late last evening when he got annoyed over grandmother’s show of displeasure over his alcoholic habits. In a sudden fit of rage, he pushed Puni Swain to the ground and hit her with a stick. She suffered severe head injuries. Later, she died in the hospital, said Balaram Nayak, inspector of Balikuda police station.

A search is on to nab the assailant, he added.

Lady cop

In another development, the police have registered a case of robbery against a woman sub-inspector for allegedly extorting a man at Balikuda.

The woman, who was on night patrolling, intercepted the complainant and allegedly snatched away his wallet. The complainant was carrying Rs 12,500 in his wallet.

The police have registered a case under Section 392 of the Indian Penal Code against the lady cop after the victim, who was a private company executive, lodged a complaint in this regard, said Jagatsinghpur police superintendent Satyabrata Bhoi.

A two-member inquiry committee has been constituted to ascertain the veracity of the complaint. Legal action would be initiated against the accused cop if charges were substantiated against her, Bhoi said.
