Bhubaneswar, Jan. 22: Mahila police today arrested a Nagpur-based businessman and his parents from a train at Bhubaneswar railway station for allegedly torturing his newly-wed wife for dowry and abandoning her at Puri railway station last night.
The accused were identified as Mrugendra Manglik, 29, his father Piyushkant Manglik, 61, and mother Rekha Manglik, 55.
They were all sent to Jharapada jail following rejection of their bail pleas. The family hails from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and is based in Nagpur.
The 26-year-old complainant is the daughter of a city-based businessman.
The complainant’s family advocate Sailendra Pattnaik said the woman and the accused had got to know each other through a marriage portal. The marriage was held in a Puri hotel on January 19.
“The youth’s family members did not demand any dowry initially and the bride’s parents splurged on the accommodation of 26 people from the groom’s side for six days in a Puri hotel. They even gave a written statement that they had not taken any dowry. But, just after the marriage was over, the groom’s family members demanded Rs 30 lakh as dowry,” said Pattnaik.
After the marriage, the bride’s family members left for Bhubaneswar on Monday morning. The bride alleged that in the evening, the groom’s family members boarded the Puri-Gandhidham Express that runs through Nagpur, but they pushed her from the train at the station just before it started running.
“They were torturing me. They abandoned me at Puri station, following which I informed my family members, who were in Bhubaneswar. As my family immediately lodged a complaint with the Bhubaneswar railway police, they detained my in-laws there. Later, the Mahila police arrested them,” said the woman.
The police booked the accused persons under sections 498 (A), 323 and 294 of the Indian Penal Code and under the Dowry Prohibition Act.
