Cuttack: Police has sought expert opinion from the Directorate of Medical Education and Training to ascertain whether the death of a 16-year-old patient at SCB Medical College and Hospital's nephrology department Sunday was caused by negligence, as alleged by family members.
Manglabag police received a complaint accusing two doctors of negligence and causing the death of Aditya Parija while undergoing treatment.
Arun Kumar Swain, inspector-in-charge of Manglabag police station, said on Monday a case had been registered against the two doctors under Section 304 (causing death by negligence - culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
"As part of the investigation, we have written to the directorate to constitute a medical board to ascertain whether the death was caused by negligence of the two doctors named in the complaint," Swain said.
"We will proceed on the basis of the report," he said.
Aditya's father, Keshav Parija of Narendrakona in Puri, has named nephrology department head Chittaranjan Kar and Sashibhushan Rout as accused in the FIR and alleged that Aditya had died waiting for a kidney transplant. Both the accused were not available for comment.
Swain said preliminary investigations, however, indicated that Aditya was fourth in line for a transplant.
The police said Parija had alleged that his son, who was admitted at the hospital on January 4, died because of undue delays by the doctors in carrying out the transplant despite the family completing all legal formalities and a direction from Orissa High Court.
The family moved an application in the high court after finding a suitable donor following legal procedures. On January 5, the high court directed the directorate to look into the matter.
After scrutiny, the directorate had issued a no-objection certificate to the SCB Medical College and Hospital superintendent for the transplant. But the two accused delayed the transplant on one pretext or the other resulting in the boy's death, the FIR states.
