Bhubaneswar, May 31: Municipal corporation authorities here are planning to write to political outfits asking them to stop defacing walls of public buildings with posters and slogans to inspire workers to attend rallies and meetings in the city.
Cinema owners, cultural organisations, educational institutions, coaching institutes and real-estate developers will also be warned against defacing walls.
Municipal commissioner Sanjib Kumar Mishra blamed the lack of civic sense for the phenomenon. “The city can only be clean when all stakeholders contribute and behave in a responsible way. We will find it hard to get funds to clean the walls. Ultimately, it will have to be done with the taxpayers’ money,” he said.
Citing examples such as walls of the Odisha State Museum, Rajmahal flyover, walls along Janpath, Rajpath and the Airport-Nandankanan road, the municipal commissioner said political organisations would initially be requested to stop such activities. But if they continue to do so, the corporation might consider slapping fines on them. He was speaking today on the sidelines of a corporation meeting in which several decisions were taken.
The civic body has sought the state government’s permission to utilise Rs 14.68 crore to develop roads in several areas.
The corporation passed a resolution today to spend Rs 1.10 crore on de-silting of smaller drains across the city before the monsoon. Drinking-water kiosks at five different places in the city will also be revived.
